Spirit Works’ “Pulling Together” piece won a major international design award at the Academy for Design and Health’s World Congress, and made the cover of World Health Design magazine! This piece was produced in collaboration with Sechelt Nation elders, youth, and cultural keepers. As part of a program we developed to support young artists we took 4 Indigenous youth straight through the entire process this included design, drafting and submitting a proposal meeting and corresponding with contractors, architects and managers and installation of the piece. In the end it embodied everything is was meant to represent around the ideals of cooperation, and building unity within the Sechelt Indigenous community and also between the indigenous and non-indigenous folks on the Sunshine Coast.

Introducing Spirit Works' Mini Longhouse!

Date Posted: 2016-03-30

We've completed two more of our mini longhouses. These have been very well received among our many customers. Need an out-building? Why not consider something cultural.

We've completed two more of our mini longhouses. These have been very well received among our many customers. Need an out-building? Why not consider something cultural.

Key features of these multi-purpose longhouses include:

  • Top quality solid cedar construction
  • A highly adaptable 20' x 20' x 11' (approx) structure able to be extended to any length
  • Natural non-toxic fire-retardant finish
  • Artwork from Sprit Works or members from your community
  • New clear cedar slat ceiling with highly durable polycarbon roof

How will you use your longhouse?

Tourism - take advantage of the only economic sector in British Columbia that grew during the recession. Cultural tourism is booming in BC and our mini-Longhouse is versatile enough to be used for small interpretive centers, carving studios or even a gift shop.

Education - turn this structure into a mini-education facility. Traditionally much of our learning took place in our longhouses; our lessons were our stories/songs and our written language was our artwork. Make this structure a refuge where the young ones can learn their roots and recapture their culture in an appropriate setting.

Exercising Indigenous Rights - tire of being invisible people on your own lands? mark your territory! Having cultural structures on your lands not only allows for your own use and occupation, but also offers notice that yours are not vacant lands!
